Who is the leading all-time top goal scorer for South Korea? Son Heung-min and their greatest strikers

South Korea have produced some great goal scorers on the international stage

South Korea have had some incredible goal scorers throughout the years as they developed into one of Asia's dominant forces at the international stage.

We all know Tottenham superstar Son Heung-min, who is arguably one of the greatest-ever players from Asia.

But what about the legendary Cha Bum-kun, winner of the UEFA Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen at club level.

Or Hwang Sun-hong, who enjoyed spells in Germany and Japan and featured at multiple World Cups?!

Who are South Korea's greatest goal-getters, though?

Let's take a look!

Getty1Cha Bum-kun | 58 goals

The greatest goalscorer to play for South Korea with 58 international goals, Cha Bum-kun enjoyed a successful stint in the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen at club level.

Cha made his debut for the senior national team at the 1972 AFC Asian Cup, with his most memorable performance coming in the 1976 Korea Cup ,when he scored a hat-trick against Malaysia within five minutes to help South Korea salvage a 4-4 draw.

The winger played his last international tournament at the World Cup in 1986.

Part of South Korea's three World Cup campaigns in 1990, 1994 and 2002, Hwang Sun-hong scored 50 international goals in 103 games between 1988 and 2002.

He made a name for himself at his first appearance at the AFC Asian Cup in 1988, when he scored his first and second international goals against Japan and Iran respectively.

Hwang was included in South Korea's World Cup squad in 1990 after scoring seven goals in the qualifying campaign, but his performance at the World Cup was somewhat disappointing as his country were knocked out in the group stages.

The 1994 World Cup was Sun-hong's toughest phase as a footballer as he missed a number of opportunities to score in their first two group games, leading to South Korea's early elimination.

Hwang's best performance for South Korea came at the 1994 Asian Games when he scored eight goals in his team's 11-0 win against Nepal.

3Son Heung-min | 37 goals

South Korea's greatest active goal-scorer, Son Heung-min has scored 35 goals for his country to date.

Son made his debut for the national team in 2010 and represented his country at the World Cup in 2014 and 2018 respectively.

He is currently South Korea's joint top scorer at World Cups, tied with Park Ji-Sung and Ahn Jung-hwan on three goals.

The Tottenham Hotspur star helped South Korea win the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and also represented his team at the AFC Asian Cup in 2011, 2015 and 2019.

4Park Lee-chun | 36 goals

Next up on the list of South Korea's all-time top goal scorers is Park Lee-chun with 36 goals in 89 appearances.

In his time with the national team between 1969 and 1974, Park led South Korea to the final of the 1972 AFC Asian Cup, which they lost.

He was also part of the team that won the Gold medal at the 1970 Asian Games held in Thailand in 1970.

In the semi-finals of the tournament, Park scored the winning goal in extra-time against Japan, before drawing 0-0 with Burma in the final, thus sharing the gold.

Younis apologises for deserting Pakistan Cup

Younis Khan has called the PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan to apologise for his actions during the Pakistan Cup in Faisalabad

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Apr-2016Younis Khan has called the PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan to apologise for his actions during the Pakistan Cup in Faisalabad. Younis, the captain of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had been fined 50% of his match fee for breaching level 2 of the PCB domestic code of conduct – his offences reportedly including questioning an umpiring decision, showing dissent and threatening an umpire – during the match against Punjab on Friday. He had refused to show up for his disciplinary hearing, and left for Karachi, his city of residence.”Younis Khan made telephonic contact with chairman PCB Shaharyar Khan today,” the PCB said in a statement. “He felt sorry for the incident that happened during the ongoing Pakistan Cup in Faisalabad. He appraised the Chairman about his willingness to participate in the remainder of the tournament.”Younis and the Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq are advisors to Shaharyar on cricketing affairs. In view of this, the statement quoted Younis as saying it was “obligatory on my part to participate in the premier [one-day] domestic tournament for the larger interest of the promotion of the game in the country.”Despite the call, the PCB said the charges leveled against Younis remained in place and the case would be processed accordingly.

Baard and Scholtz hand PNG first defeat

A power-packed half-century from 23-year old Stephan Baard was followed up by a triple-wicket maiden from from Bernard Scholtz as Namibia outplayed Papua New Guinea by 49 runs in Malahide

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsNamibia’s left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz bowled 16 dot balls in four overs•ICC/SportsfileA power-packed half-century from 23-year old Stephan Baard was followed up by a triple-wicket maiden from Bernard Scholtz as Namibia outplayed Papua New Guinea by 49 runs in Malahide.Often times there is nothing quite like scoreboard pressure. It’s doubly useful on a tired pitch where the slower you bowl the harder it is to hit. Before the game, Namibia had decided that if the ball was too full or too short, their batsmen would go after it. Come game day, they amassed 181 for 5 in their 20 overs. As with such big scores, one of the top order goes on to score big.Baard typified Namibia’s pre-game attack plan. When the ball was overpitched, he drove viciously through cover and mid-off. Three fours and two sixes came from that part of the ground. Then when PNG were forced to bowl flatter and shorter, he used the sweep and the pull liberally. Meanwhile, Namibia got past 60 runs in the Powerplay for a third time in the tournament and he eased to a fifty off 27 balls. He did slow down thereafter, but consequently stayed at the crease until the penultimate over to ensure the early platform amounted to a sizeable total. Baard, with 233 runs at an average of 77.66 is the top-scorer of this year’s World T20 Qualifier, so Namibia’s middle order simply had to bat around him. Sarel Burget, at No. 5, made 38 runs off 20 balls in a fourth-wicket partnership that yielded 74 runs in 42 balls. That he didn’t pick up the Man-of-the-Match award indicates the value of Scholtz’s effort with the ball. He offered no pace for the batsman and profited when they tried to make some of their own. That can be a difficult plan for a spinner to trust, considering this was slam-bang T20 cricket. But in Malahide, the ball wasn’t coming onto the bat and it was a pretty large ground too.So Scholtz kept bowling slow and broke PNG’s chase in the 13th over. Charles Amini mistimed a loft because of the lack of pace and was caught at long-on. Next ball, Scholtz slowed it up further and Mahuru Dai swept across the line straight to deep midwicket. The hat-trick ball was looped up above the eyeline as well, got loads of turn to hit new batsman John Reva on the pads, but it had pitched outside leg stump. He would finish the over trapping Reva plumb in front for the score to dip from 90 for 4 to 90 for 7. Scholtz bowled 16 dot balls in his four overs, Papua New Guinea’s priorities shifted from hunting down the runs to lasting the 20 overs.Things had looked very different at the start of the chase. Tony Ura helped ransack 68 runs in the first six overs to keep Papua New Guinea well ahead of the rate. He had five fours and a six in his 21-ball 34 and was looking especially good while driving the ball. But Namibia found a way past him through a run-out and thereafter did not find much resistance to their progress to the top of the Group A table thereafter. If they remain on top until the end of the league stage, they will claim direct qualification into the World T20 in India next year.

While the dramatic win will prove to be a massive boost for Mikel Arteta's side, who are currently five points clear at the top of the table, David Raya's form will be a matter of headache for the manager. The Spanish goalkeeper not only conceded three goals against Luton, but he also made a glaring mistake for Ross Barkley's goal in the second half which momentarily handed the Hatters the lead.

Ghana vs Nigeria: Five Black Stars who can wreck Super Eagles

The Swindon Town goalkeeper put up a fine display in Friday’s first leg fixture in Kumasi, producing some crucial saves, particularly on Moses Simon’s goal-bound shot. Another good day at the office on Tuesday can massively frustrate the hosts.

The most experienced man in Ghana’s backline, the Leicester City defender kept Nigeria danger man Victor Osimhen quiet on Friday. Should the centre-back find his rhythm again, he could significantly contribute to spoiling the Super Eagles’ party in Abuja.

By his own standard, Partey did not exactly live up to expectations on Friday. But by what he has shown at club level for Arsenal in recent times, the former Atletico Madrid man is more than capable of silencing Nigeria’s midfield.

Canada T20 squad to play warm-ups in Texas

Canada’s Twenty20 squad will travel to Houston, Texas ahead of the ICC Americas Division One T20 tournament to play three warm-up matches against an invitational XI assembled by local entrepreneur Sakhi Muhammad

Peter Della Penna21-Apr-2015Canada’s Twenty20 squad will travel to Houston, Texas ahead of the ICC Americas Division One T20 tournament to play three warm-up matches against an invitational XI assembled by local entrepreneur Sakhi Muhammad.A Cricket Canada official confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the games will be played on April 28, 29 and May 1 before the ICC Americas qualifier which begins on May 3 in Indianapolis. Muhammad’s Smart Choice Auto Group is a former sponsor of the USA national team, and they will play an XI that is likely to include former West Indies internationals Mervyn Dillon and Ricardo Powell, as well Timroy Allen, Usman Shuja and former USA captain Steve Massiah, who were omitted from USA’s squad for the ICC Americas tournament.Muhammad, 48, will cover Canada’s local expenses in Houston including hotel accommodation, ground transportation and meals. He says he made a similar offer to USACA to host USA’s squad for warm-up matches ahead of their participation at ICC WCL Division Three in Malaysia last October, but USACA never responded to his phone calls or emails. It played a part in his decision to end sponsorship ties with USACA after an 18-month partnership beginning in May 2013.”How can you ignore people who have sponsored you?” Muhammad said. “How can you forget those guys and not respond to them? Every customer is important to me. If they contact you, you must respond. It doesn’t look good from a business point of view. You don’t do stuff like that.”Though he is no longer a sponsor of USACA, Muhammad says he has an interest in helping out cricketers from around the region. His Smart Choice club team, which participates in various private cash tournaments around the country, has featured many USA players including new captain Muhammad Ghous, Steven Taylor, Jasdeep Singh and Adil Bhatti. Muhammad also has a good relationship with Canada players like Ruvindu Gunasekera, Hiral Patel and Rizwan Cheema – one of the reasons he invited Cricket Canada for the mini-tour.”Canada will be better prepared,” Muhammad said. “This is the fact right now and we cannot walk away from it. You’d have to ask USACA why they refused yesterday and weren’t approached this time. I waited to assemble my team for about a month before finalising. If they had approached me and said we’d like to have our guys play against Canada, I’d have loved to do it because ultimately our preference is to help out the USA team too.”The games will be played at the Smart Choice Moosa Stadium – a brand new turf wicket complex in the suburb of Pearland located about 20 miles south of downtown Houston, for which Muhammad pitched in $2million of his own money. He insists he does not want his initiative to be seen as a threat to other facilities in the country like the World Sports Park or Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.”We are not here to compete against California, Florida or Indianapolis,” Muhammad said. “More turf wickets are good for the country overall. You can’t just have Houston only. There need to be four or five centers where you can do this but the advantage we have is that Houston has a subcontinent population of over 250,000. Even if you get 5,000 of them interested you’re still doing good and if you have a good facility that gets people to come out and doesn’t cost too much to maintain then I think it’s worth it.”The winner of the mini-series will claim the Sushil Nadkarni International Trophy, named after the recently retired USA batsman.”He (Nadkarni) is from Houston and he has done a lot for US cricket,” Muhammad said, when asked about his reason for naming the trophy after Nadkarni. “After he retired I noticed that there was nothing done officially so being a Houstonian, it was important for us to acknowledge him. Doing this is something good in the long term for other players, especially for Houston people and for other senior players who play for the national team.”

Rituraj Singh leaves Rajasthan for Jharkhand

The turmoil in Rajasthan cricket has resulted in fast bowler Rituraj Singh moving to Jharkhand

Amol Karhadkar06-Nov-2014The turmoil in Rajasthan cricket has resulted in fast bowler Rituraj Singh moving to Jharkhand. Rituraj had no hesitation in spelling out his reasons behind changing states, saying he felt the Rajasthan team is far from being stable or in the right mindset to tackle the 2014-15 season.”The team hadn’t been in a great shape. Even though it was confirmed that Rajasthan will feature in the domestic season, I was getting a feeling that the team was far from stable. And when a team is in such a mindset, the players may suffer, so I thought it was best to see if I could get an opportunity anywhere else,” Rituraj told ESPNcricinfo, adding, “And I am glad that Jharkhand happened – I was born in Jharkhand, formerly Bihar.”As a result, while Rajasthan XI will open their one-day campaign in Nagpur on Friday, Rituraj will be training with his new team-mates in Kolkata ahead of Jharkhand’s one-day opener on Sunday.Rajasthan XI was put together courtesy a court ruling, after the BCCI had suspended the Rajasthan Cricket Association and subsequently left Rajasthan out of its domestic programme for 2014-15. The BCCI had suspended the RCA in May for electing Lalit Modi, an expelled administrator, as its president. The sequence of events resulted in much angst among the players, and eventually the filing of a writ petition. The Rajasthan High Court then passed an interim order appointing selection committees to pick teams to represent the state in various BCCI domestic tournaments, but not under the RCA banner.Against this background, Rituraj, who has emerged one of the most promising young pace bowlers in domestic cricket over the last three years, made his move. He is not built like a fast bowler but he has displayed on numerous occasions an uncanny ability to generate pace and bounce. The highlights of his career so far were his memorable spells in the Ranji semi-final and final of in his debut season: his match figures of 12 for 80 helped Rajasthan scrape past Haryana and make it to the final, and then in the final against Tamil Nadu Rituraj emerged as Rajasthan’s highest wicket-taker to help them register their second successive Ranji title in 2011-12.RCA’s issues with the BCCI aside, Rituraj had also had personal issues with Rajasthan’s selectors previously. Reportedly, as a result of that, even after representing India A in New Zealand in 2012-13, he was selected for only four of Rajasthan’s eight league games.Rituraj didn’t want to elaborate on the treatment meted out to him by the selectors, but confirmed that it was a factor in his decision to turn professional. “I have had some issues with the association, so I thought it would be in my interest if I look for a team where I can focus solely on cricket,” he said. The pitches in Jaipur, be it the Sawai Mansingh Stadium or the KL Saini Stadium, are conducive for fast bowlers. The conditions in Jharkhand, though, both in Ranchi and Jamshedpur, are considered to be a nightmare for the bowlers. But Rituraj isn’t bothered.”When you want to excel at the highest level, you have got to pick wickets in all conditions,” he said. “And I am confident that I have it in me to come good irrespective of the conditions. I hope I can deliver for Jharkhand.”Jharkhand have had a topsy-turvy ride in the Ranji Trophy over the last few seasons. After finishing second in the Group C in 2012-13, Jharkhand were promoted to the top tier last season but were relegated to the lowest rung again after finishing at the bottom of Group A. However, the team is considered to be a better limited-overs unit, and Rituraj feels the fact that the one-day tournament will be played before the Ranji Trophy will help the team. “Let’s hope we can do well and carry that confidence into the Ranji Trophy. I hope I can contribute handsomely and justify the faith Jharkhand cricket fraternity has shown in me.”
