And with Glen Chapple producing inswingers to claim leg before wicket verdicts against John Maunders and Jaik Mickleburgh, Essex found themselves in dire straits at 16 for 4 in the 14th over.Captain Mark Pettini and James Foster launched a recovery with a partnership of62 before both fell just before the lunch interval. Foster slashed a wide delivery from Sajid Mahmood to backward point after making 27 while Pettini, on 28, edged Anderson to second slip. Two more wickets fell cheaply but some semblance of respectability was achievedthrough the efforts of Ryan ten Doeschate and Chris Wright. They stuck it out for 27 overs while adding 70, during which time play was twice held up during an over from Mahmood in which ten Doeschate required attention following blows suffered on his forearm. But Anderson, who maintained an admirable line and length throughout, was towrap up the innings to leave ten Doeschate stranded unbeaten with 55 whichspanned 115 balls and included just three boundaries.A feature of Lancashire’s performance was their fielding, seven catches beingheld by fielders behind the wicket. Whereas the visitors held everything which came their way, Cook – who contributed just three with the bat – put down a straightforward catch at firstslip in the opening over of Lancashire’s reply.Tom Smith was the batsman to escape but he failed to make the most of hislet-off, departing lbw to David Masters for only 7. However, by then Stephen Moore was well into his stride. He quickly assumed control by collecting three fours and a six from Wright’s second over and went on to complete his half-century from 37 deliveries.Moore eventually fell for 61, containing 10 fours and two sixes, and lbw victimof Maurice Chambers from a delivery that kept low. Anderson, sent in as nightwatchman, was caught in the slips in the next over from Masters but despite those two late setbacks, it still proved Lancashire’s day.

Marcelo Bielsa should use pressure to get the best out of his players

Norwich City made it well and truly clear to Leeds United on Saturday evening that they will push them to the very end of the season to claim the Championship title and secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men were put to the sword by the Canaries at Elland Road, suffering a 3-1 defeat that saw Norwich move top of the league table with a better goal-difference than Leeds.

But, while the big defeat was probably a big wake-up call to the Whites that they still have a long way to go if they were to play top-flight football next season, the loss presents a good opportunity for the manager to push his players even further.

Leeds travel to Teesside this coming Saturday to tackle Middlesbrough in what could be another tough encounter.

Middlesbrough are currently fifth in the league and are more than capable of delivering a good performance against Bielsa’s team.

But, the manager should use the pressure to his team’s advantage and get Leeds to raise their game for the match and the rest of the campaign.

Leeds have shown the tremendous talent and desire they have in their squad and Bielsa has done a brilliant job at getting his players to deliver at just the right times this season.

The loss on Saturday was only their third one at home this campaign and would’ve been somewhat of a shock to the club, given how easily and poorly the conceded the three goals.

This should also motivate this current set of Leeds players to make sure such a result doesn’t occur again this season, while the defeat should also not see the club revert into a state of panic, because they now sit second on the table.

Leeds have proven on more than a few occasions this season that they know how to bounce back from a setback and this trip to Middlesbrough presents them with the perfect opportunity to show once again how committed and determined they are to play in the Premier League next season.

Amla double-century leads SA's charge

The double-century continued to elude Jacques Kallis but not Hashim Amla, who accumulated his way to the highest Test score by a South African in India

How they were out
HawkeyeHashim Amla scored his maiden double-century on the second day in Nagpur•AFPThe double-century continued to elude Jacques Kallis but not Hashim Amla, who accumulated his way to the highest Test score by a South African in India. He also provided solidity from the other end as AB de Villiers played havoc with the spinners’ lengths during a 108-run partnership that followed the 340-run stand between Kallis and Amla, the fifth-highest association in India. On a pitch behaving like it was a fourth-day track, it seemed a formidable total.Amla’s was an incredibly disciplined effort. He didn’t hit anything in the air. Once Kallis was done with his onslaught on the first day, there were no periods of quiet or a loud burst from Amla, still managing a 50-plus strike-rate. Today he scored 55, 45 and 38 in the three sessions, a third of which featured 25 minutes fewer, and never frustrated the other batsmen by hogging the strike. He faced 473 deliveries and the batsmen after him got 556 in all. It needed all the discipline from Amla because the pitch offered Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra ample assistance.Which is what will disappoint India more than the score. Mishra bowled 53 overs for no wicket – only five Indian spinners have managed worse. Harbhajan managed just one maiden in 46 overs, which rightly suggested there was not enough pressure created on a helpful pitch.Wicket-taking opportunities were in short supply, and half of them not taken. When Mishra beat the bat, he beat it by six inches and upwards, the wrong’un was underused, when he had Kallis plumb the umpire didn’t trust the slider to hold its line, and when de Villiers played around with his length, Mishra bowled long hops.Harbhajan had to deal with batsmen moving back and across outside off, negating the lbw, closing the bat-pad gap, and working him around for singles. When he went round the stumps and created opportunities, M Vijay and MS Dhoni dropped Amla in one over when on 149.The Kallis lbw miss didn’t hurt India much. In the next over Harbhajan got him to bat-pad one, something that had looked inevitable on the second morning, the 11th time that Kallis had started on 100-plus overnight but failed to go onto 200. The double-century seemed to be on his mind as he looked comfortable in the middle, but wasn’t in a run-scoring mode. His first run came in the ninth over of the day and he added only 14 off 61 deliveries. Had Kallis been scoring quickly, he wouldn’t have had a slip, a forward short leg and a leg slip waiting.Amla didn’t have those problems, though. He got the testing Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma out of his face by hitting three boundaries in two overs: two pulls and one off-drive. The third of the boundaries took him into the 140s when his first testing moment came.Free runs were not on offer while the ball was turning, and Amla managed only six in the first six overs of spin. Then he tried to step out to Harbhajan – bowling round the stumps – was beaten by the dip, got an inside edge that Vijay dropped at forward short leg. The next delivery he looked to glance, but the big spin took the edge that Dhoni failed to catch down the leg side. His 150 reached, Amla was solid again.Amla could continue playing his natural game, taking singles and punishing the loose deliveries, because de Villiers came out full of intent. He played almost every other delivery about four yards down the wicket. Before India knew, Mishra had dragged a few deliveries short because of the jumping around, had been pulled for three boundaries down the ground, de Villiers had reached 33 off 52, and Amla was in the 180s.Amla then pulled out the reverse-sweep against Harbhajan. In the 190s, signs of anxiety were there. He followed an offbreak into his pads, and hit it between keeper and leg slip. Then he spent eight deliveries on 199, but he came down the track and played a lovely cover-drive against Virender Sehwag to bring up the milestone. That cover-drive, having stepped out to the bowler, was the standout shot of an innings that was so remarkably even you’d be struggle to pick a favourite area or favourite shot in. With de Villiers and JP Duminy falling in relative succession, Amla still stayed solid.South Africa’s lack of intent suggested they wanted to bat till stumps, declare overnight, and start bowling in the morning session, the toughest to bat in. About 40 minutes before close of play, though, Mark Boucher and Amla got a message, they looked to up the rate, but Boucher fell to a slower ball. It always seemed a sudden change of plan to have a go for 15 minutes before stumps, and the declaration came with 25 minutes to go and Amla 24 short of the highest score by a South African.Going by how India comfortably raced to 25 for 0 in the four overs possible, South Africa would have wished they had taken those 25 minutes and got the score to as close to 600 as possible.

Former Warrior Edmondson joins South Australia

South Australia have signed the fast bowlers Ben Edmondson and Tim Lang to boost their squad for 2010-11

Cricinfo staff13-May-2010South Australia have signed the fast bowlers Ben Edmondson and Tim Lang to boost their squad for 2010-11. Edmondson, who originally moved from Queensland to Perth to pursue his career and has 51 first-class games to his name, was not offered a contract by Western Australia after a 2009-10 that was severely interrupted by injuries. At 31, Edmondson will add experience to a mostly young pace attack, and he will be looking to recapture the form he showed in 2006-07 when he was third on the Pura Cup wicket tally. He remains a bowler capable of genuine pace and swing, although he managed only one Sheffield Shield game last summer after a three-month lay-off due to a fractured finger.Lang, 29, was a more surprising pick-up for the Redbacks, having not represented New South Wales since he played four Twenty20s for them in January 2007. Lang had a consistent season in Sydney grade cricket last summer, taking 34 wickets, and will join an attack that has lost the allrounder Mark Cleary to Victoria.South Australia had already recruited the Victorian fast man Rob Cassell and his former Bushrangers batting colleague Aiden Blizzard. The Redbacks have opted for plenty of change during the off-season, sacking Mark Cosgrove and Dan Cullen and appointing Michael Klinger to replace Graham Manou as captain.South Australia squad Cullen Bailey, Aiden Blizzard, Cameron Borgas, Rob Cassell, Daniel Christian, Tom Cooper, Chris Duval, Ben Edmondson, Callum Ferguson (Cricket Australia contract), Peter George, Jake Haberfield, Daniel Harris, Michael Klinger (capt), Tim Lang, Tim Ludeman, Graham Manou, Aaron O’Brien, Kieron Pollard, Gary Putland, James Smith, Shaun Tait (Cricket Australia contract).Rookies Tom Brinsley, Michael Cranmer, Joel Davies, Michael Delaney, Tom Moffat, Kane Richardson.

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Dec-2012
ScorecardJharkhand consolidated on their dominance on the first day to pull off a win within two days against Tripura. Both teams were dismissed cheaply, but Jharkhand held the edge due to a crucial first-innings lead and chased 53 to win by seven wickets. Four bowlers took at least four wickets on the day – seamers Timir Chanda and Manisankar Murasingh for Tripura, and Ajay Yadav and Shankar Rao for Jharkhand. The win put Jharkhand at the top of the table with Andhra and Services.Resuming on 95 for 3, Jharkhand lost Jaggi for 43 in the third over of the day. This led to a collapse, and Saurabh Tiwary stuck for 7.2 overs before being the eighth wicket to fall, for 58. Murasingh took crucial middle-order wickets and Chanda, after dismissing the top order the previous day, cleaned up the tail quickly to help bowl them out for 139. Tripura, in their second innings, failed for the second time with the bat, as Rao and Yadav ran through the line-up. A partnership of 31 for the eighth wicket between Abhijit Dey and Chanda was the highest they could muster. They were bowled out for 86, their fourth-lowest total in first-class cricket. Jharkhand’s No. 3 Akash Verma smashed 23 to help chase the target of 53 inside six overs.

AVFC fans react to Gerrard’s transfer plans

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard will look to bring in a new centre-back and defensive midfielder in the January window.

That’s according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, talking to Give Me Sport, with a number of Villa fans reacting to the news on social media.

Gerrard has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Bodymoor Heath, picking up three wins from a possible four and pushing champions Manchester City all the way in his only defeat at the helm.

Attention is now starting to turn to the January transfer window, and with NSWE promising the manager a huge winter budget last month, many are wondering what areas of the Villa squad he may bolster.

According to O’Rourke, the 41-year-old has identified a centre-back and a defensive midfielder as two priority positions.

Villa fans react

Both Total Villa and The AVFC Faithful shared O’Rourke’s claim on Twitter. Here is what these fans had to say in reply, with many unhappy over the apparent plans and some highlighting Marvelous Nakamba’s transformation under Gerrard.

“why would we need a CB”

“Why? We have 3 seemingly quality CBs…and a capable Hause….and Marvelous has been awesome, with Luiz capable of sitting… main concern is a replacement for Targett (not good enough) and back up for Cash.”

Credit: @TheCount_minusO

“Really? I don’t think we need either of them right now. Surely left back and maybe a winger with one on their way out?”

“The disrespect on Marv. LB is a must, CB is secondary rn”

“Nakamba been class recently”

“4 quality CBs already? Sounds odd.”

Who is the leading all-time top goal scorer for South Korea? Son Heung-min and their greatest strikers

South Korea have produced some great goal scorers on the international stage

South Korea have had some incredible goal scorers throughout the years as they developed into one of Asia's dominant forces at the international stage.

We all know Tottenham superstar Son Heung-min, who is arguably one of the greatest-ever players from Asia.

But what about the legendary Cha Bum-kun, winner of the UEFA Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen at club level.

Or Hwang Sun-hong, who enjoyed spells in Germany and Japan and featured at multiple World Cups?!

Who are South Korea's greatest goal-getters, though?

Let's take a look!

Getty1Cha Bum-kun | 58 goals

The greatest goalscorer to play for South Korea with 58 international goals, Cha Bum-kun enjoyed a successful stint in the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen at club level.

Cha made his debut for the senior national team at the 1972 AFC Asian Cup, with his most memorable performance coming in the 1976 Korea Cup ,when he scored a hat-trick against Malaysia within five minutes to help South Korea salvage a 4-4 draw.

The winger played his last international tournament at the World Cup in 1986.

Advertisement©J.LEAGUE2Hwang Sun-hong | 50 goals

Part of South Korea's three World Cup campaigns in 1990, 1994 and 2002, Hwang Sun-hong scored 50 international goals in 103 games between 1988 and 2002.

He made a name for himself at his first appearance at the AFC Asian Cup in 1988, when he scored his first and second international goals against Japan and Iran respectively.

Hwang was included in South Korea's World Cup squad in 1990 after scoring seven goals in the qualifying campaign, but his performance at the World Cup was somewhat disappointing as his country were knocked out in the group stages.

The 1994 World Cup was Sun-hong's toughest phase as a footballer as he missed a number of opportunities to score in their first two group games, leading to South Korea's early elimination.

Hwang's best performance for South Korea came at the 1994 Asian Games when he scored eight goals in his team's 11-0 win against Nepal.

3Son Heung-min | 37 goals

South Korea's greatest active goal-scorer, Son Heung-min has scored 35 goals for his country to date.

Son made his debut for the national team in 2010 and represented his country at the World Cup in 2014 and 2018 respectively.

He is currently South Korea's joint top scorer at World Cups, tied with Park Ji-Sung and Ahn Jung-hwan on three goals.

The Tottenham Hotspur star helped South Korea win the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and also represented his team at the AFC Asian Cup in 2011, 2015 and 2019.

4Park Lee-chun | 36 goals

Next up on the list of South Korea's all-time top goal scorers is Park Lee-chun with 36 goals in 89 appearances.

In his time with the national team between 1969 and 1974, Park led South Korea to the final of the 1972 AFC Asian Cup, which they lost.

He was also part of the team that won the Gold medal at the 1970 Asian Games held in Thailand in 1970.

In the semi-finals of the tournament, Park scored the winning goal in extra-time against Japan, before drawing 0-0 with Burma in the final, thus sharing the gold.

Ghana vs Nigeria: Five Black Stars who can wreck Super Eagles

Ahead of Tuesday's 2022 World Cup qualifying decider in Abuja, we look at five of Otto Addo's possible weapons against the Super Eagles

GettyJoseph Wollacott

The Swindon Town goalkeeper put up a fine display in Friday’s first leg fixture in Kumasi, producing some crucial saves, particularly on Moses Simon’s goal-bound shot. Another good day at the office on Tuesday can massively frustrate the hosts.

AdvertisementGettyDaniel Amartey

The most experienced man in Ghana’s backline, the Leicester City defender kept Nigeria danger man Victor Osimhen quiet on Friday. Should the centre-back find his rhythm again, he could significantly contribute to spoiling the Super Eagles’ party in Abuja.

Goal Kenya.Thomas Partey

By his own standard, Partey did not exactly live up to expectations on Friday. But by what he has shown at club level for Arsenal in recent times, the former Atletico Madrid man is more than capable of silencing Nigeria’s midfield.

Kudus had a quiet first half on Friday but raised his game after the break. A repeat of his second half performance on Tuesday, or probably something even better, could spell doom for the hosts.
